In light light of our Jayspace debacle yesterday, I decided to look at what else we could put on the profiles. As it turns out, we can allow users to chat with their rediscovered or newly-found friends.
The AIM and Yahoo attributes (renamed IM (AOL) and IM (Yahoo) for the purposes of display on the user profiles) not only allow you put the address it, but they also show one’s online status and are linked to your client IM software (AOL or Yahoo). This is because they are attribute types: AIM ID and Yahoo ID, respectively, rather than merely text.
While I’m pleased to have discovered this (nay, ecstatic), I am surprised no one told me that I could do this, given our many discussions about this module. So . . . now we all know, I guess. And now I want MORE:
- Can we have the same for MSN and Gmail? (Aren’t these the other popular IM tools? Does anyone know what’s popular right now?)
- Can’t we have e-mail be of an Attribute type JT calls “email” and is made to be linked to open one’s mail app? All it would really take is appending “mailto:” to front of whatever is entered or comes over via import. You guys can do that, surely.
Anyway, I wanted to share. We do have IM on the User Profiles (so long as you have AIM or Yahoo).
Yours,
Christian
