Re: Chat Module copy disappeared

Hi, Darren,
I entered information into the chat window for visitors. Now it is gone.
It used to look something like this:
It had, however, the information for the next chat.
It’s gone now.

Hi, Darren,
I’m wondering if you can shed some light on the chat module, http://admissions.creighton.edu/CULive/Chat/tabid/343/Default.aspx.
I had the information for the next chat in the module.
Today, when visiting to the page, I found the information gone. Is there some reason or explanation for this?
It happened before with the last chat, as well, but I thought it might have something to do with my own error. This time, I haven’t been to the page in days, so there’s no way I could have made the information disappear.
Is this a bug? Or a feature?
Yours,
Christian

Hi, Darren,
Thanks for your feedback.
Regarding the placement of the content. I believe we would want it to exist off the home (admissions.creighton.edu/college_entrance_quiz.html).
Regarding your other comments: I have passed them on to Jan who is handling that.

Also, please share where you would like this content to exist?  I am assuming, given our conversations, that it is the Admitted students page?  Is that correct?  Perhaps the home page?

Ok, I have reviewed this quiz and run through it a few times.  Feedback:
1.  First, nice work.  I know you have largely used an existing plug-in, but still, nice work.
2.  There are some misspellings and typos throughout.  However, I won't point these out as you have likely already identified them yourself and you are far more qualified to identify that than I am.
3.  I would like to make suggestions on the wording and content of a few of the questions if you are open to it.  My notes are as follows and correspond to the page indicator in your bottom right corner:  ( I hope this helps)

#1:  College Entrance Quiz....seems a little strong of a title and not fun.  Perhaps consider:  "Debunking Popular Admissions Myths.  Test your Admission's I.Q.!!" or something along those lines.  "What do YOU know about College Admissions?"  "What Colleges Want You to Know about the Admissions Process."....something that doesn't force a student to be "graded" or appear to do so.  Does this make sense?  In addition, I would work with Jan to get a higher level quality for your header and footer for the presentation, so that it matches the photos better.

#2:  When applying to college or university, high ACT or SAT scores are the most important factor.  If your scores aren't high enough, your application will not be considered.  (suggested wording change to the question.)

In the response, I would change the answer slightly to de-emphasize academic success....since we are talking about the application review.  Maybe something like:  "You're correct.  Classroom academic performance is more important that your performance on standardized tests.  When evaluating an application, your overall grades, test scores and other factors will be evaluated together.  So, even if you are not satisfied with your ACT or SAT score, there are a lot of other opportunities for you to shine in the admissions process.

#3:  For this one, would you want to provide verbiage relative to AP (advanced placement) rather than just saying challenging?  Isn't that more the benchmark/verbiage?  I would also provide encouragement in the answer.  Something like" Advanced Placement courses can be difficult, but the benefits of enhancing your overall academic standing and the additional knowledge you obtain are worth the effort.  Keep up the hard work!!

#4:  Question:  Colleges prefer students that are involved in a lot of different activities.
Answer:  False.  While involvement in a lot of activities can be viewed as a positive, most colleges will prefer students with a significant level of involvement and proven leadership in activities they are passionate about, instead of limited involvement in a lot of general areas.  So, stick with the activities you love and really make a difference!

#5:  (I think this is fine overall...but since this is more of a parent issue, perhaps....)  Recommendation letters should come from important people that my parents know, whenever possible.

#6: fine

#7:  Another opportunity to speak to parents....without speaking to them.  Ala:  "Contacting the Admissions office nonstop with phone calls, emails and letters, or having my parents do so, will help me get admitted.

False.  Remember, the college or university you are interested in probably wants you to attend just as bad as you want to be a student there.  But, constant badgering by a parent or student via email can create a negative perception.  Once your application has been sent, wait at least 7 days and then call to confirm it has been received and is complete.  Also, ask when you should expect a response.  From there, as tough as it might be, the best option is to be patient and wait.  If you haven't heard from the college following then they said they would contact you, it is appropriate to do additional follow up at that point.

#8:  I would consider a new approach to this question or eliminating it.  I don't know that we are getting across what we want here.

#9:  Fine.

A few additional items:  The width of your stage needs adjustment so that the wings are no visible.
I know we want to keep this "generic" but I wouldn't be afraid of including a few Creighton plugs here and there.  I would ESPECIALLY do so on the Quiz Results page.  Provide contact information for the Admissions Office.  Also, I would include an opportunity to submit an email address and/or phone number to have Admissions contact this person.  Maybe have them indicate if they are a parent or student.  Finally, you might want to explain more about the web site.  Perhaps split the Thank you from the Results, if you can, so more can be shared on each page?

What do you think?

Hi, Darren,
We would like to put our flash quiz for our fall search on the website. I have attached the latest draft (though probably not the final draft) with the required files, so that you can see just what we want to upload. When I tried to upload the zip file, the site came back with a “restricted file type” message, meaning that I couldn’t upload files of these types.
How can I be able to do that?

Hi, Darren,
The problem with that theory is that it should play out on other pages. But it doesn’t.
That’s why I note this page in particular.

Hi, Darren,
In the continuing saga of the chat page just acting funny, I have copied and pasted a picture of the page as it appears in Safari (Mac).

You’ll notice that nearly all the links are in red, which is inconsistent with the way the links display on other pages in the site when using the same browser (Safari for Mac). This suggests that there maybe something odd about this page, which first was noticed in the way the HTML was rendering (no spaces between <p> tags).
Please let me know what you find out.

RE: Redirect after login

Christian-

I discussed this with Orfa when I was down last.  I am sorry we didn't include you in this dialog.

Because of the fact that we are sharing all the awesome, cool admittedness with Admitted students...we can no longer allow users, once they log in, to maintain existence on the page they were on at the point at which they log in.  We are aware of this issue and working on it.

What I CAN do however, is set up a redirect specific to bloggers that, when they login ANYWHERE on the site, the are placed at the blogger location.

Would that be acceptable?  If so, I can take care of that for you or instruct you on how to do so.  Also, which URL would you want them to start at?  The master Blogger home page area?

Hi, Darren,
I would like to change the redirect after login. I’ve discovered, thanks to a blogger, that when you login, it takes you to the admissions.creighton.edu, not to the page you were at when logging in.
Can we change that?
The only people for whom I would like a redirect would be admitted, I think, so that they see all the cool admitted-ness. Otherwise, people generally don’t want to be redirected.

Google map embed [and google analytics?]

Hi, Chris,
OK. I’m finally getting back to this.
Regarding the two issues:
1) Is the skin that you created for this page (
http://admissions.creighton.edu/GoogleMap/tabid/1029/Default.aspx) large enough to support the map?
2) Where’s the javascript (beside being in the code of the map page itself)?
I don’t know javascript, but it looks like there’s a lot of code on that google map page that creates the customized icons and information that is on there. Can you take it from the page itself?
Let me know if what I’ve said makes any sense at all.
Yours,
Christian

Hi guys-
I looked into this a little more on Friday night.  It looks like Google has updated the API so it no longer requires you to modify the body tag.  It still says you need to put the javascript between the <head></head> tags though.  In page settings => Advanced Settings, there is a prompt called "Page Header Tags".  This allows you to put stuff in here that you need to have rendered between the <head></head> tags.  How convenient!  The sample script that they provided was too large to store in this field in the DB (it only allows 500 chars).  So, to get around this I created a javascript file and put the excess code into a function and called that function to make it work.  We don't allow javascript files to be uploaded via the file manager though so you'd have to zip the file up and send it to us if for some reason it needed to be updated.

Two issues remain:
1) looks like we need a skin that allows a large enough content area to support the map and
2) the map you created and sent me in a link a while back (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=106317282409338476744.0000011295cf0dbe042ad&ll=41.265324,-95.945663&spn=0.006145,0.01442&t=h&z=16&om=1 <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&amp;hl=en&amp;msa=0&amp;msid=106317282409338476744.0000011295cf0dbe042ad&amp;ll=41.265324,-95.945663&amp;spn=0.006145,0.01442&amp;t=h&amp;z=16&amp;om=1> ) has a bunch of customized locations, text, icons etc to identify landmarks.  I'm assuming that this was done via javascript as the API eludes to.  We will need that javascript so it can be included in our rendition of the map.  I don't know if you have this handy or not - if not I'd assume you'd be able to get it from google somewhere since you're the author?!  We could use the link above in an iframe but that isn't likely what you're looking for.  For now, I created a page, very simple, just has the page settings stuff in it and a text/html module on it that consists of the following code:

<div id="map" style="width: 800px; height: 600px"></div>

Keep two things in mind, if you edit this text/html location you're going to get the browser rendered code - so it'll look like more code than what's above because once the page is rendered the javascript functions add to the div called "map".  If you want to adjust the size of the rendered map, just edit text (on the text/html module), click on the source button (or click on the Basic Text Box radio button) and paste the above code with your modifications in it.

The page is located below, is viewable by Admin Only and does not appear in the menu.  Check it out!

Subject: FW: Google map embed [and google analytics?]

Hi, Chris,
This is what I had initially sent to Jason.
The idea was that we would be able to embed the map on the page rather than redirect them.

Barring that, we talked about a skin for the site that only had the top nav bar and nothing on the sides so that we could iframe the map in.

The former was an idea, the latter seemed the practical alternative. However, if you can add that header information at the port level, can we also then get Google Analytics: http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55488&topic=11126 <http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55488&amp;topic=11126> . As you can see from this link, I don’t think I have access to that place on the page, immediately before the </body> tag.

Yours,
Christian

Subject: Google map embed

Hi, Jason,
I have found that information about embedding Google maps. I also have an API key.
Here’s what I found. As you can see from the sample, the information is in the header for embedding.
Yours,
Christian

BlueOx new lists default to other colleges

Hi, Darren,
I wanted to let you know about a quirk that we’d really like to have fixed:
When creating a list in BlueOx, which we do a lot, we find that sometimes the list defaults upon creation to another school. Today it was Grand View College (see image below).
Can we please have it NOT do that when creating a new list? Can’t it always default to Creighton when we’re creating the list.
Having to change the settings cuts down on our productivity at this end.

Yours,
Christian

Recent Message Board Posts display

Hi, Darren,
I have taken a little pic that shows you how the html code is still showing up in the Recent Message Board Post viewer.
Could you take a look at this to see how it might be fixed?

Yours,
Christian

Message boards

Hi, Darren,
I know that we’re working on this, but I wanted to just document that we’ve got a couple issues:
  1. I ‘m not receiving message board notifications when there are new posts.
  2. We are also having display issues when we have the message board posts picked up by an rss reader. The html code seems to be coming across.

Yours,
Christian

Blogs

Hi, Darren,
I’m starting to think that blogs can be about as ugly a project as the word itself would suggest.

There’s two issues:
  1. Repeated entries
  2. Segregation of blog types (student and faculty/staff)

1. Repeated Entries
One of my bloggers brought this to my attention, while the main blog page no longer has the repeated entries that it once did, many of the individual blogs still do. Here is a list of those that have repeated entries:
  • Josh's blog
  • Karen's blog
  • Jenna's blog
  • Johnny's blog
  • Susie's blog
  • Jeremy's business career blog
  • Ami's blog
Could you please have these repeats removed?

2.
Segregation of blog types (student and faculty/staff)
The blogs “broke” in the first place because I was trying to segregate the types of blogs we want to have. Right now, we have student blogs and a faculty/staff blog. In the future this may include parent and even alumni blogs. I would like to be able to separate these, but I’m not sure how. Can you set up a time for you, me and one of the programmers (would Chris P be the right person?) to talk about how this might be accomplished?

I’ll see you tomorrow.

Yours,
Christian

Text only on the website

Hi, Darren,
Our webteam (specifically Elizabeth Davies) has told us that we now have the option to allow users to make the site text only .

We would like to do this, preferrably near where visitors have the option to login or register.

Here are the instructions to make this available:
There are 2 ways you can add the text only link. You can either hard code the URL or add a referrer link
Hard Code:
<a href="http://assistive.usablenet.com/tt/http://www.creighton.edu"
title="text-only page produced automatically by Usablenet Assistive">Text only</a>
Referrer:
<a href="http://assistive.usablenet.com/tt/referrer"
title="text-only page produced automatically by Usablenet Assistive">Text only</a>

Please let me know when you think this might be done.

Yours,
Christian

FW: Syndication?

I haven’t told you about this.
But our syndication of the article view makes every article’s title “Recent News.”
Here’s the link: http://admissions.creighton.edu/Home/tabid/259/moduleid/1045/RSS.aspx
Can this be changed?
