OK. I’m finally getting back to this.
Regarding the two issues:
1) Is the skin that you created for this page ( http://admissions.creighton.edu/GoogleMap/tabid/1029/Default.aspx) large enough to support the map?
2) Where’s the javascript (beside being in the code of the map page itself)?
I don’t know javascript, but it looks like there’s a lot of code on that google map page that creates the customized icons and information that is on there. Can you take it from the page itself?
Let me know if what I’ve said makes any sense at all.
Yours,
Christian

Hi guys-
I looked into this a little more on Friday night. It looks like Google has updated the API so it no longer requires you to modify the body tag. It still says you need to put the javascript between the <head></head> tags though. In page settings => Advanced Settings, there is a prompt called "Page Header Tags". This allows you to put stuff in here that you need to have rendered between the <head></head> tags. How convenient! The sample script that they provided was too large to store in this field in the DB (it only allows 500 chars). So, to get around this I created a javascript file and put the excess code into a function and called that function to make it work. We don't allow javascript files to be uploaded via the file manager though so you'd have to zip the file up and send it to us if for some reason it needed to be updated.
Two issues remain:
1) looks like we need a skin that allows a large enough content area to support the map and
2) the map you created and sent me in a link a while back (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=106317282409338476744.0000011295cf0dbe042ad&ll=41.265324,-95.945663&spn=0.006145,0.01442&t=h&z=16&om=1 <http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=106317282409338476744.0000011295cf0dbe042ad&ll=41.265324,-95.945663&spn=0.006145,0.01442&t=h&z=16&om=1> ) has a bunch of customized locations, text, icons etc to identify landmarks. I'm assuming that this was done via javascript as the API eludes to. We will need that javascript so it can be included in our rendition of the map. I don't know if you have this handy or not - if not I'd assume you'd be able to get it from google somewhere since you're the author?! We could use the link above in an iframe but that isn't likely what you're looking for. For now, I created a page, very simple, just has the page settings stuff in it and a text/html module on it that consists of the following code:
<div id="map" style="width: 800px; height: 600px"></div>
Keep two things in mind, if you edit this text/html location you're going to get the browser rendered code - so it'll look like more code than what's above because once the page is rendered the javascript functions add to the div called "map". If you want to adjust the size of the rendered map, just edit text (on the text/html module), click on the source button (or click on the Basic Text Box radio button) and paste the above code with your modifications in it.
The page is located below, is viewable by Admin Only and does not appear in the menu. Check it out!

Subject: FW: Google map embed [and google analytics?]
Hi, Chris,
This is what I had initially sent to Jason.
The idea was that we would be able to embed the map on the page rather than redirect them.
Barring that, we talked about a skin for the site that only had the top nav bar and nothing on the sides so that we could iframe the map in.
The former was an idea, the latter seemed the practical alternative. However, if you can add that header information at the port level, can we also then get Google Analytics: http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55488&topic=11126 <http://www.google.com/support/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?answer=55488&topic=11126> . As you can see from this link, I don’t think I have access to that place on the page, immediately before the </body> tag.

Christian

Subject: Google map embed
Hi, Jason,
I have found that information about embedding Google maps. I also have an API key.
Here’s what I found. As you can see from the sample, the information is in the header for embedding.

Christian
