I totally missed EduWeb, spending that same time in New York City, actually, on vacation. So “missed” may not quite apply here. New York was awesome. I want to go back. I didn’t think about work at all really, which was great.
So, regarding the video. I’m actually working on videos right now for our tour. Carl Weiland has put together two that he has given me.
Here are the details:
720 x 480 (including letterbox)
at least 6:30 min
30 fps (I think)
no compression
I’m bringing them into the Flash Video Encoder
video codec: On2 VP6
video data rate: WHAT IS ACCEPTABLE?
audio codec: MPEG Layer III (MP#3)
audio data rate: 96 kbps (stereo) SHOULD I USE MONO?
My questions are:
What size should this really be (resolution)?
Six minutes seems long to me for a web video. What do you think?
These are the videos that I have created with what I think are relevant information:
https://people.creighton.edu/~cbu04905/video/ty_150kbps_400x200.html
https://people.creighton.edu/~cbu04905/video/ty_150kbps_300x200.html
https://people.creighton.edu/~cbu04905/video/ty_cropped_150kbps_400x200.html
https://people.creighton.edu/~cbu04905/video/ty_cropped_150kbps_300x200.html
The first two videos are almost 7 min. The last two are only 5. I wanted to see what kind of file size change we could expect. It’s substantial, as you can see.
The other big factor in file size seems to be the video quality. It seems to me like the 150 kbps is a bit low. But when I crank it up to 400 kbps (the standard “medium” setting), the file size jumps substantially. Perhaps somewhere in between would be acceptably high quality and low(ish) file size.
Any help or suggestions you can provide would be welcome.
Yours,
Christian

Christian-
I haven’t seen (maybe I missed it) any feedback from Bryon on this…so here is something from my perspective. We do not have a video compression guide, per se. For me, it is about testing and application. What are you using to complete your compressions? What data rate/keyframes/codec…as well as how long is the video? What is the application for which this is being applied. That is how I typically determine compression/size.
We should touch base. Missed you at eduWEB…however, you would have hated the venue. (I did). It was a Trump facility…and old. It was smoky (they can still smoke in casinos until October and the only dining option other than a steakhouse was a crappy café and Hooters. (I ate at Hooters twice on this trip…because the café sucked!!!) Good conference this year though. Did you keep up on the blogs?
Catch you later.

Hi, Bryon,
Given the concerns that both you and Darren expressed about our video file size, I wanted to find a guide for video compression for web deployment that is both well-compressed and nice looking.
Have you such a guide?
Also, is there any way I can ftp to the James Tower servers?
I’m going to have more videos (some may be over 10 mb if I can’t find my way around that).
Yours,
Christian

Hi Christian,
AdmissionsGenie doesn’t have any file size restrictions for uploading at this point.

Hi, Bryon,
Thanks so much for doing this. Is there a file size ceiling for which I need to watch out?
Yours,
Christian

Christian-
I am a little late to the table in participating in this discussion…however, to Bryon’s point have you tried to size the video down? 9MB is really, for a video of this length, fairly sizeable. I would recommend either shortening the video or considering different compression settings.

Hi, Bryon,
I’m trying to load a video which I’m attaching (sorry, it’s big). I’ve tried on both Firefox (multiple times) and Safari.
Here are the errors I’m getting:
Firefox
The connection was reset
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.
* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.
* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Safari
Safari can’t open the page.
Safari could not open the page “https://admissions.creighton.edu/Admin/FileManager/tabid/269/ctl/Edit/mid/730/ftype/File/rtab/269/Default.aspx?dest=video%5c” because the server is not responding.
Is the video too big? Is there a size limit?
Yours,
Christian
